Video Hardware

Video Gear

This section describes the hardware used in both the PC and Mac workstations

JVC MiniDV/S-VHs Combo deck

This device allows us to not only play and record S-VHS for video editing but also plays and records onto Minidv tapes, eliminating the need to bring in a camera to hook up to the system when capturing footage. Please note that the systems only plays S-VHS and MiniDV and for footage that is captured onto 8mm tape, it is absolutely necessary to bring in an 8mm camcorder to hook up to the editing system.

Toshiba DVD Player/Recorder

This device can be used for both importing video from DVD and exporting your final movie back to a DVD-R.

Panasonic Video Monitor

This monitor is integrated into the editing system so that you are able to observe every event throughout the editing process and have the ability to switch from S-VHS to DVD to the Firewire box, which allows you to monitor everything going to and coming from the computer.

ADVC 110 Firewire Standards Converter

This is the device that converts the analog video feed from the JVC DVD player or camera into a digital format that the PC is able to work with connected through a Firewire cable, this is what makes Non-Linear Editing possible.

AVTools Time Based Corrector

This device works directly with the Firewire converter to help process the video signal and assures that the resulting picture turns out as crisp and clean as possible to edit with.

Knox RS4X4 HB Routing Switcher

This device is the most integral part of the Mac based video-editing system and is used to switch and route the signal from the JVC to the DVD player/recorder to the computer. Almost every piece of hardware attached to the video editing workstation is connected directly to the Knox Switcher. You will be using the Routing Switcher when capturing and exporting from the computer to make sure that the video signal gets where it needs to go.
